Everything Wrong With Genesis Part One

We know many of the stories of Genesis. Want to know why people make fun of our beliefs as Christians? It's because we just won't admit that many of the early stories in the bible are just that, stories.

Let's begin.

Genesis Chapter 1 verse 6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
This should be enough evidence to prove Genesis is a story, not an historical document. Are there signs of a firmament? We've sent rockets into space. We have a telescope that can identify other galaxies...still no firmament. Of course, for the author(s) of Genesis the idea of a flat world with a dome that kept water out (blue sky) and what we know as stars were just holes in the firmament shining the light of heaven through made perfect sense.

But guys, it's 2016.

5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day...16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

Day one God creates day and night, and also creates the light....but it wasn't until day three that God creates the light sources of day and night.

Also, if this is suppose to be straight Dictaphone from God as the author, why no mention of creating other planets?

21And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good...27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

This is from Genesis chapter one. So, how come in chapter two it is told differently? In the second chapter man is created first.

7 And the LORD God formed man out of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed...19And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that the name thereof.

Then the animals were created by God. So again, for those who believe the Bible is "cold-hard fact" why did God feel the need to correct himself in chapter two?

Chapter 3 verse 4: And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

Okay, ignoring the fact that snakes can not talk, there are many other things wrong with this story. How about how an omnipotent being unable to see that his creation of this serpent would be not-so-good of an idea? (Also, note that the serpent is never referred to as Satan.)  So, to believe this story is 100% true, then you have to either believe that God is sometimes caught off guard or set up Adam and Eve to fail leading to original sin.

God then handed out punishments for the three evildoers. For Eve she was given the punishment of pain during child birth. For Adam, he was to work for many years and then die. For the Serpent...he is to crawl on his belly and eat dust all the days of his life.

So the creature that caused the whole mess by lying to Eve, gets the punishment of continuing to do what it already had been doing? Umm...I call foul.

Chapter 7: The Noah Story

We all know the story, and there is a lot that is wrong with it. However, it is still debated, so what I list below is mostly opinion. Feel free to comment and correct anything.

  1. Why would an omnipotent being create a world that he knew he was going to have to destroy just a few years later?
  2. From the National Center of Science Education:  in an era when hollowed-out logs and reed rafts were the extent of marine transport, a vessel so massive appeared that the likes of it would not be seen again until the mid-nineteenth century AD
  3. Noah's family were not architects, engineers, and did not have the physical means to build a boat big enough to fit all of those animals.
  4. Since creationists don't believe in any kind of evolution wouldn't there have to be termites, carpenter ants, and other wood destroying pests on this wooden ship.
  5. NCSE: feeding and watering troughs need to be the correct height for easy access but not on the floor where they will get filthy; the cages for horned animals must have bars spaced properly to prevent their horns from getting stuck, while rhinos require round "bomas" for the same reason
  6.  Noah and his family of five would have needed at least 81 years of non-stop work to build the ship. The Great Pyramid took around 100.000 slaves to build.
  7. Ships made out of wood can not be made to the size suggested in the bible. The biggest wooden ships made in human history were the six masts ships that flooded constantly.
  8. The ship built by a farmer turned architect, could not have been strong enough to withstand the storm that a giant flood would bring on.
  9. 50,000 animals would have to have access to clean water and food.
  10. The writings of Noah's flood story doesn't date back as far as the Epic of Gilgamesh which is a flood story very similar to Noah's that deals with polytheism.

Look for part two on a later date...because there is just too much.
